The Choir follows London Symphony Orchestra choirmaster Gareth Malone as he attempts to start a school choir from scratch and, in only nine months, make them capable of competing with the very best at the 2006 World Choir Games in China.
Gareth chooses Northolt High School, a comprehensive school in Middlesex, near London. Northolt has no real tradition of music and no formal choir, and the kids have grown up listening to R&B and rap — worlds apart from Gareth's classical upbringing.
He battles to instil in them his love of choral music and to teach them to sing at international competition standard. This observational documentary series follows the journey of Gareth and his choir of 30 school pupils as they prepare for their trip to China.
In 2007 The Choir was awarded a BAFTA at the British Academy Television Awards for Best Feature.
